Girls Basketball Varsity and JV Head Coach: John Innes

John Innes, who joined Valley Catholic in 2003, teaches sophomore English and junior/senior creative writing. Coach Innes was a three-sport athlete at St. George’s High School in Spokane. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Hamilton College in Clinton, New York, where he played three years of varsity golf and was the radio announcer for the varsity men’s and women’s basketball teams. From 1997 to 2001 he coached boys basketball under Jennifer Mountain—who has gone on to coach at Portland State, Santa Clara, and Gonzaga—and Ken Anderson, who played with John Stockton at Gonzaga. The varsity program appeared in two Washington State Tournaments (’98 and ’01), winning seventh and second place trophies. In 2003, Coach Innes came to Oregon to teach English at Valley Catholic and coach under Ross Thomas, who had won seven state titles in Washington. In 2004, Coach Innes was named head coach of Valley Catholic. His teams have captured four West Valley League titles (2007-2010) and three Lewis and Clark League (LCL) titles (2012, 2013, 2014). Coach Innes was named West Valley League Coach of the Year in 2007, 2008, and 2009 and LCL Coach of the year in 2012, 2013, and 2014 and in 2013 State Coach of the Year. The Valiants were the 2013 OSAA 3A State Champions, second at State in 2007, 2012, and 2013, third in 2008, and fourth in 2009. During their time under Coach Innes, the Valiants have compiled a record of 229-54 (.810).

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Girls Basketball Assistant Coach: Pat Thomas

After having coached baseball and basketball for the Valiants, Pat Thomas returned to Valley Catholic in 2006 from Archbishop Murphy High School in Everett, Washington, where he had taught English and served as assistant varsity boys basketball coach. Pat graduated from St. George’s School in Spokane in 2001, where he was a multi-year All-Conference baseball player and cross country runner and started for the 2001 Dragons basketball team that played for the Washington State Championship. In his senior year he was named co-Athlete of the Year. At Whitman College he was a starting pitcher and two-year baseball captain. Pat teaches English and history at Valley Catholic and is the Valiants head baseball coach. The 2017-2018 season will be Pat’s twelfth assisting Coach Innes.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Girls Basketball Assistant Coach: Allison Waibel Gates ’05

Allison Waibel Gates, a long and cat-quick #1 on the press, earned three varsity letters in basketball at Valley Catholic and another three in soccer. She was a defensive whiz on Valley Catholic’s 2004 State Tournament team and in 2005 was team captain. In 2009, Allison was named co-director of the CYO basketball camp held annually at Valley Catholic. In that position, she helped design drills and activities for over 100 campers. Allison graduated from Oregon State University in 2010. After serving as alumni relations manager for the Sisters of St. Mary of Oregon Foundation, Allison was named director of student activities at Valley Catholic High School in 2017.
