Mark your calendars for the third annual VCES Heritage Day & Prayer Service on Friday, May 25. This special day will provide us another opportunity to recognize our cultural diversity and celebrate each other. Following is an overview of the day’s activities and events.
Students are invited to wear clothing that represents their heritage or family’s culture. In the morning, students who are in special dress will be invited to explain the features of their clothing. Students not participating in heritage dress should wear their school uniforms.
Family Groups & Customs/Traditions
All students should come to school with a custom/tradition form filled out. Forms will be distributed in the coming weeks. Students will have an opportunity to share their family custom or tradition with their family group. Every student belongs to a family group. The groups have been meeting throughout the year and include students from each class (K-5).
Our prayer service will include songs, opening and closing prayers, and recitations of the Our Father in different languages. If your child is interested in sharing the Our Father in a language other than English, please email Ms. Willison at [email protected] to express your interest and to share the language that your child would be speaking. If your child is interested in leading a prayer, the responsorial psalm or reading from the Bible, please contact Ms. Willison by May 18.
Students will begin our prayer service with a procession of flags representing their family’s country of origin. If your child would like to be a flag presenter, please email Ms. Willison at [email protected] to express interest and to share the country whose flag should be prepared for the procession.
Following the prayer service, will be have time for up to five cultural presentations. In selecting the presentations or performances, we will look for variety and cultural diversity. To express interest in having your child or a group offer a cultural presentation, please email Ms. Willison at [email protected] and share the performers’ names as well as a description of what the performers will be doing. If there are more students interested than time allows, we will randomly select students or groups.
We look forward to having an amazing day together learning from each other and celebrating our cultural diversity!
Love is celebration. Love is joy. Love is moving forward. – Pope Francis
