As we move into the second semester, the middle school is preparing for its largest event of the year. The 51st Valley Catholic Middle School Speech Tournament will be held on Saturday, March 3. This annual event brings nearly 1,000 contestants, parents, and teachers to our campus. As part of our middle school program, all seventh- and eighth-grade students are required to participate because we believe public speaking is an essential life skill. Fifth- and sixth-graders are invited to participate if they choose.
This is also an opportunity for parents and students who are not participating to earn service hours while seeing the tournament in action. All hours spent volunteering at the speech tournament can count toward required service hours for Valley Catholic Elementary School. In some cases, it is possible to volunteer for several jobs and receive up to eight service hours. Please be sure you have a current background check and that your “Called to Protect” training is up-to-date.
Whether you have a middle school, high school or elementary school student, we would really appreciate your help. Hosting an event of this magnitude is truly a campus-wide undertaking. There are several areas where we need help, including setup and cleanup, the welcome desk and first aid station, registration, data entry, hallway monitors, lunch and snack sales, and the judges’ hospitality room. If you would like to volunteer, contact VCMS Vice Principal Dale French at firstname.lastname@example.org or call (503) 718-6509.
We are proud of our students, and this opportunity would not be possible without your help. I look forward to seeing you at the tournament.
