Update from VCHS Athletic Director Jan. 7

Basketball
Valley Catholic’s boys and girls basketball teams each competed in the prestigious Salem Academy Christmas tournament over the break. Each team brought home a 3rd place finish. The three day tournament, in its 6th year, has become widely regarded as the state’s best 3A/2A boys and girls tournament. The boys had some outstanding performances as they defeated Umatilla, lost to Western Mennonite, and beat Rainier to run their season record to 7-3 overall. The girls team also opened up with a win over Umatilla, before losing to Portland Christian, and bouncing back to beat Rainier. Christian McDonald (FR) and Jeni Picken (SR) were named to the all-tournament teams.

Valley’s teams are each 2-1 in conference play and will host Westside Christian on Friday January 8th. JV girls will start at 3:00 followed by JV boys, varsity girls, and the varsity boys.

Swimming
Valley’s boys swim team went undefeated in the month of December, winning two separate dual meets at Molalla and taking home first place in the Tillamook and Seaside invitational. The boys have positioned themselves as one of the favorites to win their district. The girls have been paced by some strong individual performances from Maddie Schumacher and Julia Anderson, who have each placed first in several events. Valley Catholic will be very busy over the next week with meets at Tillamook (Friday January 8th), North Marion (Tuesday January 12th), and The Dalles (Saturday January 19th).

Dance
You will have an opportunity to see one of the state’s best dance teams when they perform at half-time of the boys and girls basketball games on January 8th, 15th, and 22nd. Charisma will resume their competitive season on Saturday January 16th when they travel to Thurston High School. The state competition will take on a different look this year as all classifications will compete at the Memorial Coliseum March 17-20.
