Students Receive Grant from Air Force Association

air_force_assoc

3s_student_modelSister Barbara Rose Sohler’s third graders at Valley Catholic Elementary School were the recipients of a grant from the Air Force Association to study the history of flight. Through the Educator Grant program, the Association promotes aerospace education activities in classrooms from kindergarten through twelfth grades. The Air Force Association believes that one of the most significant means to affect student learning is to fund grants to meet the unmet and unfunded educational needs of students. Each school year, the Association awards grants of up to $250 to worthy projects that significantly influence student learning.

Children were supplied with models of various types of airplanes, helicopters and early flying machines and were given class time to put them together. The Air Force Association wishes for students in 3rd grade to understand a basic history of aviation. Sister Barbara Rose was excited to see her students work on the Wright Brothers plane from Kittyhawk. Students were also expected to study the forces of gravity and friction on aircraft.

Girls Softball 3-time State Winners and other Athletics News

Softball wins third straight title

The Valley Catholic Valiants defeated Willamina 4-3 last Friday to capture the OSAA 3A state championship. It was the third straight title for the Valiants, and fourth in program history. Roni Illias has been the head coach for all four of the title runs. Valley never trailed in the game taking an early 1-0 lead in the first inning when Maggie Hastreiter scored after reaching on an error. Kindra Mills held Willamina to only one run through the first three innings, and provided an RBI for the Valiants. Jill Suratt was named player of the game for her efforts in center field, at the plate (3 hits), and pitching the final four innings of the game. It is the first time in school history that a team has won three consecutive state championships. Valley Catholic ended the season with a nineteen game winning streak. Perhaps an even more impressive statistic is that Valley Catholic did not have a single senior on the roster.
