Third Graders Take Field Trip to Dennis Uniform

dennis1dennis3Underneath the Hawthorne Bridge in SE Portland, there is a maze of generic looking square buildings. As trucks and cars zoom by, it’s hard to notice anything unique about what’s going on inside any of them. Read the rest of this entry »

Students Take Pride in Studying Individual U.S. States

state_fair17As the culmination of the 5th graders study of the United States, students got a chance to display research they had done on a state of their choice. In April, each student presented tidbits of info and pictures, while dressing up like someone well known from their state and speaking in the first person as that famous character. The President of Valley Catholic School, Sister Rita Watkins, beamed with pride when she came across her home state of North Dakota. Earlier in the year, after students had each picked a state to research, they were required to create a state brochure as well. Parents and fellow students and faculty were also in attendance at the event.

Civil War Cannon Visible off TV Hwy

cannon3Passer-bys on TV Hwy. must have wondered if there was some military memorial being erected on a sunny day in April. Longtime history teacher at Valley Catholic High School, Phil McQueen, made arrangements for a 12-pound cannon to be wheeled onto campus along with four civil war reenactment actors. As part of an Oregon artillery regiment, they displayed ammunition and tools of the trade of an artilleryman’s life during the Civil War. They talked about how the cannon crew would operate in battle, and how they were trained to unleash volley after volley at their opponents, and how difficult it could be with the pressures of battle. Students Imagine A Grown-Up Life at Career Day

career_day1Career Day at the Elementary School is a special day when you don’t have to wear your uniform, as long as you follow one rule: You have to dress like something you would like to be when you grow up. From Sports figures, to executives, to doctors — students wore colorful garb, and then were scheduled to go to rooms to talk to career professionals who came to discuss what they do doing the work day. In the hot lunch room, they met a dentist and her assistant who talked about their teeth and dental hygiene. In the cold lunch room, a lawyer and a police officer spoke about catching and trying suspects and how it’s good to stay out of trouble. A woman who studies trees for Oregon State University and a local sheriff also spoke to students. A local Thriftway manager even brought cookies and juice.
