He performed in VCS productions throughout high school including Aladdin, Honk!, Damn Yankees, Annie and South Pacific. Post graduation, Charlie spent four years touring with The Young Americans, a group that later would bring him right back to our campus! (Read more about The Young Americans visit to Valley Catholic in 2009.)

A colleague of his sister’s, Amy Palamino (whose résumé includes touring with Cats, 42nd Street and Cabaret), invited Charlie to audition for the Broadway Rose Theater Company production of A Chorus Line. Charlie landed the role of Italian Mike Costa, who, like Charlie, begins a dancing career after following his sister to dance school. A Chorus Line runs Aug. 4-22. To learn more about the production and to purchase your tickets, visit Tigard’s Broadway Rose Theater Company.

The Young Americans were founded almost 50 years ago in Hollywood, Calif. to provide our talented Young American student performers (15-21 years of age) with education in music, dance, performance and teaching, and to use this training, and the good will and optimism of these young people to support music in schools and its inherent benefits through conducting International Music Outreach Workshops in educational facilities of all types throughout the world.

The high school will be sponsoring a student team, “Footloose at VC,” in honor and in memory of those who have survived and are fighting cancer. The elementary school has two teams, “Valley Catholic Elementary” and “Valley Catholic Too.”

The elementary school team has raised approximately $1,000 each year for the past three years. According to one of the team captains, Valley Catholic Elementary Teacher Janet Rabe, their goal this year is to exceed previous years.

She continues, “Our personal goals include to increase awareness of the need to continue to fund cancer research, to honor our family members and friends who have had cancer and to build community in our school by participating in a bigger community event that is held on our campus. We have teachers, administrators, parents, students and community members on our team. This is the fourth year for some of our team members. It is an opportunity to get to know each other better as well as to make new friends.”

The event chair has already stated that compared to last year’s event, the Beaverton Relay for Life has doubled money and donations and also doubled the number of participating teams!

The event runs for 24 hours and will take place on the Valley Catholic track, with camping on the football field.

Everyone interested is encouraged to come out and support this wonderful event.

Coach Peter Morgan will Begin the Lacrosse Era at Valley Catholic

The spring of 2011 will see Valley Catholic add another offering to its sports programs - boys lacrosse. Peter Morgan has been given the task of building the program from the ground up. Much like the start of football in 2007, Valley is hoping for quick returns when it comes to building a competitive program.

Coach Morgan played professionally in the National Lacrosse League since 2001. This included a stint from 2005-2009 with the Portland Lumberjax. Within that time with Portland, Coach Morgan helped lead them to the western conference championship in 2008, was named to the all-star team in 2009, and became the franchise leader in goals scored. The last two seasons he has spent with the Washington Stealth.

Coach Morgan is a graduate of Simon Fraser University, where he was also captain of their basketball team from 1999-2001. His coaching responsibilities over the years have seen him work several camps and with various school programs. In 2010 he was the head JV coach at Beaverton High School. Coach Morgan is looking forward to the challenges that lie ahead in building our lacrosse program from day one. Coach Morgan plans to actively encourage anyone with an interest in America’s fastest growing sport to participate next spring.

Please contact Athletic Director Jeff Gallagher with any questions.

Austra had been a varsity assistant and JV coach at Valley Catholic in 2008 and 2009. She will take over the program this coming fall. As a high school player, Austra was Co-MVP at Westside Christian HS on the Mens Team (there was no girls team at the time). Coach Bloms received a scholarship to play for NAIA Div. 1 Concordia University in Portland. She tore her ACL at the beginning of her sophomore year, red-shirted, and was recruited to play for NCAA D-I Florida Atlantic University. On a full ride at FAU she won a spot on the U.S. National Deaf Soccer Team in 1999, led her team to an historic 1st-place international win, and landed a permanent spot on the 2005 Women’s Deaf Team Olympics Squad. She was selected as co-captain for seven years and led the team to an Olympic Gold Medal at the 2005 Deaf Olympic Games in Melbourne, Australia.

Coach Bloms has been coaching soccer since 1994 and is looking forward to taking over at Valley Catholic. Austra is committed to continuing to build Valley Catholic into one of the state’s premier soccer programs. The Valiants have competed in the state tournament in each of the last five seasons, highlighted by three league championships and an appearance in the state finals in 2008.
