Music School

Mission & History

Valley Catholic Music School provides beginning and advanced music instruction to children and adults throughout the metropolitan Portland area.

Valley Catholic Music School, sharing the charism and mission of the Sisters of St. Mary of Oregon, strives to give interested students the opportunity to recognize and develop their God-given musical talents through excellence in professional teaching and service.  Valley Catholic Music School is open to students of all ages affording opportunities to develop as performers, musicians, ongoing learners and at the same time enhancing their use of leisure time.

Traditionally, the Sisters of St. Mary of Oregon have fostered and encouraged the arts into their schools. There is no better example of that than on the Beaverton campus.  Valley Catholic Music School has a high reputation with universities throughout Oregon. Students have played with the Portland Youth Orchestra, the Metropolitan Youth Orchestra and the Vancouver Orchestra.

Every student enrolled in Valley Catholic Music School has the opportunity to learn and enjoy music and develop life-long skills as part of the curriculum. Private lessons are also available in piano, harp, voice, organ, guitar as well as strings, woodwinds, brass instruments and percussion. Students enrolled for private lessons include K-12 students from the Valley Catholic campus, as well as students outside our school system and adults in the community.

Teaching of music theory from the Bastien Theory textbook is included in lessons from Valley Catholic Music School. Middle and high school students at Valley Catholic School taking private lessons cover the Alfred Theory Book (three levels) and AP theory is offered to those who are advanced.

As part of the Valley Catholic Music School education, students have three opportunities for public performance at department recitals. Participation in at least two recitals gives a student eligibility to audition for department scholarship.
