June Poling, Valley Catholic’s Middle School science teacher since 2002, earned a B.A. in Animal Physiology from the University of California at San Diego and a teaching credential through a specialized math/science program from the University of California at Irvine. June is a member of the teacher advisory committee for Oregon Health and Science University, which develops ways to teach the public about their research findings. Through this work June learns and brings to her classroom the latest in biomedical research. As a result of her committee work, June became involved in OHSU’s Teacher Institute for the Experience of Science (TIES) program http://ties.ohsu.edu/index.htm . “TIES is a unique immersion experience in the culture of biomedical research designed especially for middle school teachers in Oregon.” As a result, June enriches the biomedical and other research experiences in her classroom. This became evident when her program won OMSI’s best research-science program of Oregon for 2007 – 2008 and when she was awarded the Oregon Science Teachers Association’s Outstanding Classroom Teacher Award (2010) and the Mary Omberg Award (2011). Work through the TIES program resulted in recognition one of June’s lessons entitled the “Classroom Zoo” to be published in an upcoming National Science Teachers Association Scope Magazine. June’s eagerness to learn led her to continue her education in a Masters of Education program at George Fox University where she is working on her Initial Administrative License. Because of her desire to become a leader in education, she is stepping up into the role of Vice Principal of the middle school.
