Dan Schauffler, who has directed Valley’s Concert, Jazz, and Pep Bands since 2000, graduated from Catlin Gabel School, earned a B.F.A. from Warner Pacific University, and studied music at the City College of New York. Dan was the saxophonist for The Crazy 8’s, one of the all-time great college bands—their “Johnny Q. Public” was #1 on many college radio stations, and when they recorded a live album at the University of Oregon the crowds from Eugene and Corvallis set a Memorial Union Hall attendance record. In 2007 Dan and the Crazy 8’s were inducted into the Oregon Music Hall of Fame, along with James DePriest, Paul Revere and the Raiders, Robert Cray, and Doc Seversen. The Crazy 8’s also played the opening of the 2009 Hall of Fame induction. Before The Crazy 8’s were formed, Dan played with Nu Shooz, whose “I Can’t Wait” rose to #3 on the Billboard Pop Chart and was nominated for a Grammy Award. Dan leads Valley’s bands with all the energy and sense of fun that made The Crazy 8’s famous.
