Courtney Ferrari has taught at Valley since 2000. She now teaches Middle School Social Studies and has taught journalism and English as a Second Language (ESL) in the high school. Courtney earned a B.A. from Lewis and Clark College, majoring in history and sociology. She has lived abroad in Germany, Senegal and Japan. In 2010, she received the Oregon Middle School Social Studies Educator of the Year award from the Oregon Council for the Social studies.
She and science teacher June Poling created a year-end cross-curricular 8th-grade project, that integrates science, ethics, and government and culminates in a mock legislative hearing. The activity grew out of a summer seminar with the Teacher Institute for the Experience of Science, supported by Oregon Health and Sciences University, and the National Institute of Health. In September, 2011, the National Council for the Social Studies published Courtney’s account of this lesson plan in Middle Level Learning.
